Hop on and avoid road construction
If you are a frequent commuter to downtown Minneapolis, you may have noticed some work crews on Marquette Avenue and on Second Avenue. It’s part of a project that will improve conditions for transit customers, pedestrians and bicyclists in downtown.
The City of Minneapolis is completely rebuilding the two streets from 12th Street to First Street. When finished, the project will mean more capacity for buses and faster bus travel times.
Starting Sept. 8, traffic will be rerouted from Marquette and Second avenues. Express buses that travel on those streets will be on detour through the end of construction season, which is anticipated to be in late November. Construction is expected to resume in March 2009.
Once road construction is completed, two lanes of traffic on each street will be designated for buses, which will travel in the opposite direction of two lanes of auto traffic. There also will be wider sidewalks and new bus shelters with better lighting and NexTrip displays, giving you real-time bus departure information.
